He holds a Bachelor of Fine Art, from the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, University of Maiduguri, Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Painting from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. Currently, he is pursuing a Ph.D. in Art History in the Department of Fine Art at the same institution. He is also a lecturer in the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the University of Maiduguri. Over the years, Idahosa has established himself as an accomplished artist whose works have been exhibited across Nigeria. He has also undertaken several commissioned projects for government institutions and private collectors. His artistic excellence has earned him notable recognition, including the 2013 National Art Competition Grand Prize, sponsored by the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, the Artistic Achievement Award from the Luxembourg Museum in 2021, and a Global Arts in Medicine Fellowship in 2023. Beyond the visual arts, Idahosa is also a proficient musician, reflecting the breadth of his creative interests and artistic expression.
Drawing from personal memories and lived experiences, Harrison Idahosa creates works that invite viewers into emotionally engaging spaces where themes of belonging, vulnerability, resilience, and shared humanity come to the forefront. His paintings explore the emotional and psychological dimensions of everyday life, encouraging audiences to reflect on their own experiences while recognising the universal values that connect us all. Working primarily in abstract realism, Idahosa places the human figure at the centre of his compositions. His paintings combine realistic forms with abstract elements, expressive brushstrokes, textured surfaces, and recurring symbols such as crowns, paper tape, paper planes, and childlike drawings. These visual elements are carefully intertwined to communicate ideas about identity, dignity, hope, transformation, and personal growth.

His creative process is equally significant. Idahosa builds his paintings through successive coatings of paint and mixed media, continually adding, removing, and reworking the surface. This process creates visual depth while revealing traces of the artwork’s evolution, making each painting both a finished image and a record of creative exploration. At the heart of Idahosa’s practice is a belief in the resilience and inherent worth of every individual. His inspiration comes from everyday life, personal encounters, and the conviction that every person possesses the capacity to overcome challenges and realise their potential. Rather than presenting idealised narratives, his paintings acknowledge life’s difficulties while affirming the possibility of hope, transformation, and renewal.

Reflecting on his artistic philosophy, Harrison Idahosa explains:
“My work matters because it connects individual experiences with shared human values. I want viewers to see reflections of their own journeys, understand who they are and what they carry, and recognise the possibility of change, growth, and progress.” Through his thoughtful exploration of memory, identity, and the human condition, Harrison Idahosa continues to make significant contribution to contemporary Nigerian art. His ability to combine technical skill with emotional depth and symbolic storytelling positions his works as unique.
