He is known for his creative exploration of culture, tradition, history, and social issues through diverse artistic forms. His practice cut across two-dimensional works, three-dimensional forms, installation art, and kinetic-inspired compositions. Garba’s artistic approach reflects a desire to explore and expand the stylistic possibilities associated with the philosophy of the Zaria Art School while remaining connected to the cultural identity of Northern Nigeria, particularly Hausa traditions. One of the most distinctive aspects of Garba’s work is his use of calabash as a major artistic medium. He works with both complete and broken calabashes, transforming them into visually engaging and conceptually rich artworks. According to the artist, the use of calabash serves as a tribute to the traditional calabash repairers of Northern Nigeria, locally known as “Gyartai.” This once-important local practice has gradually faded because of the introduction of modern household utensils, making the calabash appear outdated in contemporary society. Through his work, Garba not only preserves aspects of cultural memory but also promotes ideas of recycling, reuse, and transformation. His experimental use of calabash, combined with elements of installation and abstraction, places his practice within an evolving contemporary artistic language that may eventually be recognized as a distinct artistic movement influenced by Northern Nigerian culture.

Garba’s artistic practice demonstrates how traditional materials can be reimagined within contemporary art discourse to address present-day social and political realities. One such work is Political Arena III, a mixed-media artwork. The artwork is composed of a complete calabash positioned at the center, surrounded by broken calabash fragments of different colours and sizes. These fragments are connected to the central structure using raffia, creating a web-like network across the composition. The arrangement gives the work both sculptural depth and visual movement, while also reinforcing its symbolic meaning. The title of the work immediately suggests a connection to politics and governance. The central spherical calabash appears to represent political leadership and authority, while the surrounding broken calabashes symbolize ordinary citizens and voters. The raffia connections between the centre and the outer fragments suggest the relationship that should exist between leaders and the people they govern. Ideally, this relationship should be built on responsibility, trust, accountability, and a commitment to serving the people. See below for Political Arena iii.

Political Arena iii, Nura Garba, Mixed Media, 120cm by 100cm

Within the context of contemporary Nigerian politics, the work becomes relevant, as Nigeria continues to experience political tension, economic hardship, insecurity, corruption, unemployment, and growing public dissatisfaction with leadership. During and after elections, citizens often place hope in political leaders with the expectation that governance will improve their living conditions. However, many Nigerians feel disconnected from those in power because promises made during campaigns are often not fulfilled. This growing gap between political leaders and citizens is reflected in Political Arena iii through the separation between the central calabash and the fragmented outer forms. The broken calabashes may also symbolize the struggles, frustrations, and fragile realities experienced by ordinary Nigerians. Despite their fragmented appearance, they remain connected to the centre, suggesting that the people still depend on leadership for direction, support, and national stability. At the same time, the fragile raffia bindings may imply that the relationship between leaders and citizens is weak and vulnerable. The work, therefore, raises important questions about governance, responsibility, and the true meaning of political representation in Nigeria today. Through Political Arena iii, Garba combines traditional materials with contemporary socio-political commentary. Thus, the work is a reflection on leadership, power, and societal conditions. By using calabash, a culturally significant material within Northern Nigerian society, the artist creates a work that is entrenched in local identity while addressing broader national concerns. Additionally, Political Arena iii stands as both an artistic and social statement on the realities of Nigerian politics and the expectations citizens place on those entrusted with leadership.

Henry Yusuf Masari Nura Garba is a contemporary Nigerian artist of the Zaria Art School, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.
